How to Turn a Favourite Photo Into a Meaningful Keepsake

Sometimes a photo is already special.

A tiny hand curled around your finger.
A family cuddle on the sofa.
A wedding moment.
A grandparent with a grandchild.
A quiet everyday photo that somehow becomes one of your favourites.

But sometimes, adding just a few simple words can make that photo feel even more meaningful.

Back in my photography days, I used to love adding special quotes to client photos and photobooks. It was never anything over the top. Just a small line of text on a favourite image, or a meaningful phrase on the front or back cover of a photobook.

And often, that tiny extra detail made the image feel much more like a keepsake.

These days, it’s much easier to add text to photos using tools like Canva, Photoshop, Affinity Photo or other design apps. You can use a simple typed quote, create your own word art, or use ready-made quote overlays.

Here are a few simple ways to turn a favourite photo into something extra special.

1. Choose a photo that already means something

You don’t need the most perfect photo.

In fact, some of the best keepsake photos aren't perfectly posed at all. They might be silly, slightly imperfect, or just full of feeling.

Look for photos that make you pause for a second.

A family moment.
A baby milestone.
A wedding detail.
A quiet everyday memory.
A child laughing.
Someone you love simply being themselves.

The feeling matters more than perfection.

2. Add a few meaningful words

The right words can give your photo a little extra heart.

You could use a short quote, a family phrase, a simple caption, a date, or a few words that describe the moment.

For example:

  • These are the days we keep forever

  • A moment worth keeping

  • Little hands, big love

  • This is what love looks like

  • Some moments stay with us always

  • Ordinary days become precious memories

Try not to add too much text. A few carefully chosen words are often enough. Sometimes the simplest words are the ones that mean the most.

3. Keep the design simple

When the photo is emotional, the design doesn't need to work too hard.

A clean font, soft spacing and a simple layout can be far more effective than adding lots of decoration.

If your photo is light, try darker text.
If your photo is dark, try white or pale text.
If the background is busy, place the words in a quieter area of the photo.

The aim is to make the words feel like they belong with the image, not like they are fighting for attention.

4. Turn it into wall art

A favourite photo with a few meaningful words can make a beautiful piece of wall art.

You could print it as:

  • a framed photo

  • nursery wall art

  • amily room décor

  • a gift for grandparents

  • a wedding or anniversary keepsake

  • a new baby gift

This can work especially well with soft family photos, newborn images, wedding portraits and quiet everyday moments.

5. Use it on a card or printable gift

Quote overlays can work beautifully for cards too.

You could create:

  • a Father’s Day card

  • a Mother’s Day card

  • a new baby card

  • a birthday card

  • a thank you card

  • a keepsake card for grandparents

  • a simple printable photo gift

A photo, a few words, and a blank space for a handwritten message can make something feel really personal.

6. Add it to a photobook or memory album

This is one of my favourite ways to use meaningful words with photos.

A quote can work beautifully on:

  • the front cover of a photobook

  • the back cover

  • an opening page

  • a closing page

  • a section divider

  • a special memory page

You don’t need a quote on every page. In fact, it usually works better when it’s used sparingly.

A few special words here and there can make the whole book feel more thoughtful.

7. Use it in a junk journal or scrapbook

If you enjoy memory keeping, scrapbooking or junk journaling, photo quote overlays can be a lovely addition.

You could use them on:

  • family memory pages

  • baby milestone pages

  • wedding keepsake pages

  • travel journals

  • seasonal memories

  • everyday snapshots

You can also print the quote separately as a little journal card, or tuck it into a pocket alongside the photo.

8. Make your own text overlay in Canva

You don’t have to use ready-made overlays. You can also create your own in Canva.

Start with your photo, then add a short phrase using a simple font pairing.

A good basic formula is:

  • one elegant serif font

  • one handwritten or script-style font

  • plenty of space

  • no extra clutter

Try placing the text at the top, bottom, or over a part of your photo which isn't too busy. If the text is hard to read, try adding a subtle transparent shape behind it, or choose a different colour.

9. Use ready-made quote overlays

Ready-made quote overlays can make the process quicker and easier, especially if you want something that already has a polished typography layout.

You can place the overlay on top of your photo, adjust the size, and change the colour if the file format allows it.

For example, SVG overlays are useful because you can often recolour them to suit your photo or project.

This makes them handy for family photos, client photography, wall art, cards, journals, memory books and other finished designs.

If you’re on my email list, you’ll find a set of photo quote SVG overlays in this week’s email and inside your freebie hub, so you can try this idea with your own photos.

Final thoughts

A meaningful keepsake does not have to be complicated.

Sometimes it is just:

A favourite photo.
A few simple words.
A moment you want to remember.

Whether you turn it into wall art, a card, a photobook cover, a journal page or a printable gift, adding text to a photo can make it feel personal, thoughtful and full of heart.

And often, those are the little things we end up treasuring the most.

Same Trend, Two Very Different Looks

I thought I’d share a little about what I've been working on this week because it’s a great example of how one trend can work in completely different ways. The trend in question is That’s Amore . Italian-inspired bridal shower themes are everywhere right now: lemons, pasta, wine, handwritten menus, relaxed table styling. Pinterest is full of them, and they’re proving really popular with clients too. But what’s interesting isn’t just that the trend is popular. It’s how differently it can be interpreted. Looking at Trends From Two Angles Whenever I spot a trend like this, I tend to look at it from two sides: as a stationery designer creating finished invitations and event pieces and as someone creating clipart for other designers to use in their own work And one thing has become very clear: The same trend can suit completely different people depending on how it’s styled. So instead of creating one single “That’s Amore” look, I explored the theme in two very differ...

How to Use Design Trends Without Starting From Scratch

Design trends can feel exciting… and slightly overwhelming at the same time. Especially if you feel like you’re supposed to reinvent everything just to keep up. Why trends can feel daunting Trends move fast, and it’s easy to feel behind if you’re trying to design from scratch every time something new pops up. You spot one gaining momentum, feel that familiar pressure to act quickly, and suddenly it seems like everything needs redesigning. New colours. New graphics. New layouts. All at once. But what if trends didn’t have to mean starting over? Why I don’t start from scratch After working with printable designs for a while, I’ve found a simpler approach - one that feels more sustainable, more creative, and far less stressful. Instead of redesigning entire products, I prefer to: 💛 Start with layouts buyers already love 🧱 Keep the basic structure consistent ✨ Introduce subtle trend elements Sometimes that’s: A colour refresh A small graphic swap A style t...
