Creating Just for the Joy of It

Sometimes the loveliest creative projects are the ones that were never meant to be sold. The birthday invitation made at the kitchen table. The handmade card tucked into an envelope. The scrapbook page filled with little memories. The poster made just because someone thought it would look nice on the wall.

Not every design needs a listing, a caption or a price tag.

Sometimes it’s enough that it made someone smile.

But a funny thing seems to happen when you enjoy being creative...

At some point, somebody will suggest turning your hobby into a business.

If you enjoy drawing, you should sell prints.

If you enjoy crafting, you should open an Etsy shop.

If you enjoy designing, surely you should be selling your work.

And if that's something you want to do, that's wonderful. I've built businesses from creativity myself, so I'm certainly not against it.

But I do think we sometimes forget something important.

Not everything we create has to make money.

Some things are worth making ... just because

Some of the most meaningful things I've ever made weren't products at all.

They were birthday invitations.

Party decorations.

Photo books.

Cards for family and friends.

Little projects created simply because I hoped someone I loved would enjoy them.

Those things never appeared in a shop.

Nobody bought them.

Yet they're still some of my favourite things I've created.

I think sometimes we put so much pressure on ourselves to be productive that we forget creativity can simply be fun.

You don't need:

• a business plan
• thousands of followers
• a perfectly polished style
• a niche
• expensive tools
• or permission from anyone else

You're allowed to create simply because you enjoy creating.

And honestly, I think there's something quite special about that.

Because years later, people rarely remember how many followers you had.

But they do remember the handmade card.

The birthday banner.

The scrapbook page.

The photo book.

The little thoughtful touches that made them feel loved.

That's the real magic of creativity.

And that's more than enough.

Same Trend, Two Very Different Looks

I thought I’d share a little about what I've been working on this week because it’s a great example of how one trend can work in completely different ways. The trend in question is That’s Amore . Italian-inspired bridal shower themes are everywhere right now: lemons, pasta, wine, handwritten menus, relaxed table styling. Pinterest is full of them, and they’re proving really popular with clients too. But what’s interesting isn’t just that the trend is popular. It’s how differently it can be interpreted. Looking at Trends From Two Angles Whenever I spot a trend like this, I tend to look at it from two sides: as a stationery designer creating finished invitations and event pieces and as someone creating clipart for other designers to use in their own work And one thing has become very clear: The same trend can suit completely different people depending on how it’s styled. So instead of creating one single “That’s Amore” look, I explored the theme in two very differ...

How to Use Design Trends Without Starting From Scratch

Design trends can feel exciting… and slightly overwhelming at the same time. Especially if you feel like you’re supposed to reinvent everything just to keep up. Why trends can feel daunting Trends move fast, and it’s easy to feel behind if you’re trying to design from scratch every time something new pops up. You spot one gaining momentum, feel that familiar pressure to act quickly, and suddenly it seems like everything needs redesigning. New colours. New graphics. New layouts. All at once. But what if trends didn’t have to mean starting over? Why I don’t start from scratch After working with printable designs for a while, I’ve found a simpler approach - one that feels more sustainable, more creative, and far less stressful. Instead of redesigning entire products, I prefer to: 💛 Start with layouts buyers already love 🧱 Keep the basic structure consistent ✨ Introduce subtle trend elements Sometimes that’s: A colour refresh A small graphic swap A style t...
