Meri Kirihimete — A Celebration of Christmas in New Zealand

When my good friend visited from her home in New Zealand earlier this year, our conversation soon turned to Christmas and how different it feels when the festive season falls in the middle of summer.

While those of us in the Northern Hemisphere cosy up with hot chocolate and twinkling fires, Kiwis are basking in sunshine, enjoying barbecues on the beach, and celebrating with fresh blooms and ocean breezes. ☀️🎄

That chat sparked an idea: to design a summer-Christmas collection that captures the warmth, joy, and relaxed spirit of a Kiwi Christmas. The result became my Meri Kirihimete Collection, now available in my Zazzle store and as printable cards in my Etsy shop.

What Christmas Looks Like in New Zealand

Christmas in New Zealand arrives at the height of summer, just as schools are breaking up and families are heading off on holidays. Instead of snowmen and woolly jumpers, you’ll find:

It’s a celebration that feels carefree, connected to nature, and full of light — and that’s exactly what I wanted to bring into this design series.

The Inspiration Behind the Meri Kirihimete Collection

Each piece in the collection blends soft coastal tones with touches of festive sparkle. I imagined sunshine on the water, tropical greenery, and those iconic New Zealand creatures that make everyone smile.

The designs include:

  • 🥝 Kiwi birds wearing Santa hats and surrounded by pastel summer florals.

  • 🕊️ Kingfishers and fantails perched among gift boxes and native blooms.

  • 🌸 Pōhutukawa blossoms in soft pinks, corals, and golds.

  • 🌊 Surfboards and seashells adding a playful coastal twist.

Each design is a celebration of both the Southern Hemisphere Christmas spirit and the beauty of Aotearoa (New Zealand).

Why I Loved Designing these

Designing these reminded me that Christmas looks different everywhere, but the feeling is the same: warmth, love, and connection.

Whether it’s snowflakes falling or waves crashing, there’s beauty in celebrating the season in your own way. My hope is that these Meri Kirihimete designs bring a touch of joy to those celebrating under the summer sun and maybe inspire others to see Christmas through a new lens.

Same Trend, Two Very Different Looks

I thought I’d share a little about what I've been working on this week because it’s a great example of how one trend can work in completely different ways. The trend in question is That’s Amore . Italian-inspired bridal shower themes are everywhere right now: lemons, pasta, wine, handwritten menus, relaxed table styling. Pinterest is full of them, and they’re proving really popular with clients too. But what’s interesting isn’t just that the trend is popular. It’s how differently it can be interpreted. Looking at Trends From Two Angles Whenever I spot a trend like this, I tend to look at it from two sides: as a stationery designer creating finished invitations and event pieces and as someone creating clipart for other designers to use in their own work And one thing has become very clear: The same trend can suit completely different people depending on how it’s styled. So instead of creating one single “That’s Amore” look, I explored the theme in two very differ...

How to Use Design Trends Without Starting From Scratch

Design trends can feel exciting… and slightly overwhelming at the same time. Especially if you feel like you’re supposed to reinvent everything just to keep up. Why trends can feel daunting Trends move fast, and it’s easy to feel behind if you’re trying to design from scratch every time something new pops up. You spot one gaining momentum, feel that familiar pressure to act quickly, and suddenly it seems like everything needs redesigning. New colours. New graphics. New layouts. All at once. But what if trends didn’t have to mean starting over? Why I don’t start from scratch After working with printable designs for a while, I’ve found a simpler approach - one that feels more sustainable, more creative, and far less stressful. Instead of redesigning entire products, I prefer to: 💛 Start with layouts buyers already love 🧱 Keep the basic structure consistent ✨ Introduce subtle trend elements Sometimes that’s: A colour refresh A small graphic swap A style t...
